Global Institute for Strategic Studies (GISS)

About Us

The Global Institute for Strategic Studies (GISS) is an independent research institution dedicated to analysing global security, geopolitics, conflict dynamics, and strategic risk within an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Established as a platform for rigorous and forward-looking analysis, GISS focuses on understanding how power, conflict, and economic systems interact across regions and how these interactions shape both regional instability and the broader international order.

Founded in 2020, the Global Institute for Strategic Studies (GISS) is an independent research and policy institute dedicated to advancing evidence-based analysis on international affairs, security, geopolitics, economic resilience, emerging technologies, and global governance.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C.

GISS brings together a multidisciplinary network of senior researchers, policy analysts, subject-matter experts, and practitioners from diverse professional and academic backgrounds. The Institute is guided by a Board of Directors and supported by an Advisory Council comprising distinguished experts in international relations, security studies, economics, technology policy, and regional affairs.

Through research publications, policy briefs, strategic assessments, and expert dialogues, GISS seeks to bridge the gap between research and policymaking, providing actionable insights to governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector.

The Institute is committed to the principles of academic independence, methodological rigor, transparency, and intellectual integrity, fostering informed debate on the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century.

GISS Mission

At the Global Institute for Strategic Studies (GISS), our mission is to deliver rigorous, independent, and forward-looking analysis that explains how global power structures, conflict dynamics, and economic systems are evolving in an increasingly interconnected world.

We aim to go beyond traditional analysis by uncovering the underlying mechanisms that shape instability from geopolitical competition and military transformation to sanctions, illicit economies, and transnational networks.

Through evidence-based research and strategic insight, we seek to provide policymakers, researchers, media institutions, and global stakeholders with the tools needed to understand complexity, anticipate risk, and make informed decisions.

Our work is driven by a commitment to clarity, analytical depth, and independence, ensuring that our research remains credible, relevant, and impactful in a rapidly changing global environment.

GISS Vision

Our vision is to become a leading global platform for strategic analysis and insight, recognised for its depth, credibility, and ability to explain complex global transformations with Our clarity and precision.

We aspire to shape the way global challenges are understood by bridging the gap between research, policy, and real-world developments — offering analysis that not only interprets events, but also anticipates emerging trends and future risks.

At GISS, we envision a world where decision-making is informed by knowledge, where complexity is translated into understanding, and where strategic insight contributes to greater stability, accountability, and global awareness.

What GISS Do

At the Global Institute for Strategic Studies (GISS), we focus on four core areas that define the evolving landscape of global power and security:

  • Geopolitics & Global Power
We analyse shifts in global power structures, strategic competition between states, and the geopolitical forces shaping regional and international order.

  • Conflict & Security
We examine armed conflicts, military transformations, and emerging security threats, with a focus on how warfare is evolving across both conventional and non-conventional domains.

  • Geoeconomics & Sanctions
We study the intersection of economics and power, including sanctions regimes, illicit economies, shadow financial systems, and the use of economic tools as instruments of influence.

  • Strategic Risk & Forecasting
We assess global risks and develop forward-looking analysis to anticipate emerging threats, identify patterns of instability, and support informed decision-making.

Through these areas, GISS aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how political, economic, and security dynamics interact in shaping today’s complex world.

GISS Approach

Our work is built on a multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach that integrates multiple layers of analysis to capture the full complexity of global developments.

  • Data-Driven Analysis
We rely on quantitative data, trend analysis, and structured datasets to identify patterns, measure impact, and support our findings with empirical evidence.

  • Field-Based Insights
Whenever possible, we incorporate field research, firsthand accounts, and on-the-ground perspectives to complement analytical frameworks and ensure contextual accuracy.

  • Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT)
We utilise open-source intelligence to track developments, verify information, and analyse publicly available data across digital platforms and global information flows.

  • Policy-Oriented Research
Our analysis is designed to be actionable, translating complex insights into clear frameworks that can inform policy, strategy, and institutional decision-making.

GISS Values

  • Independence – Free from political and commercial influence

  • Integrity – Evidence-based, transparent, and accountable

  • Depth – Beyond headlines, into systems and structures

  • Impact – Research that informs real-world decisions

Why It Matters

In today’s world, conflicts are no longer contained within borders.
They are interconnected, complex, and increasingly global in their impact.

Local crises now have far-reaching consequences — shaping energy markets, disrupting trade routes, influencing migration patterns, and affecting global financial stability. What happens in one region can rapidly cascade into broader international challenges.

Understanding these dynamics is no longer optional — it is essential.

At GISS, we provide the analytical frameworks needed to make sense of this complexity, helping:

  • Decision-makers navigate strategic uncertainty and policy risks
  • Media institutions interpret events beyond headlines
  • Researchers access structured and evidence-based analysis
  • International organisations respond more effectively to emerging threats

By connecting local developments to global systems, we aim to transform fragmented information into clear, actionable insight.
